As I mentioned before in one of my previous posts, I used to finish exams very quickly and in A/Ls chemistry paper I even did an extra essay question (both of physical chemistry questions + organic chemistry). Now how do I do that? It's through practice. There are certain skills that you need to have to be able to finish quickly and give correct answers quickly at the same time.

In an exam people waste most of their valuable time by thinking which questions to do. By the time you figure out which questions you are gonna answer, you have already spent more than 10 minutes. First thing is to avoid that. Especially in exams like A/Ls you know what are the essays that are going to be there. So pick your questions at home! not during the exam! For an example in a chemistry paper I always answer organic chemistry question and inorganic chemistry questions. But never the industrial chemistry question no matter how much I know about that topic.(Because there are no precise answers for those questions you are never gonna get full marks) So pick certain areas you are good at and master them! So during the exam you will not have to wonder whether to do thermodynamics or to do matter and radiation... Now that we know what questions to answer the next step is to speed up the process.

First and the very obvious one is the writing speed. This comes with practice. Whenever you are in classes/ school try to write your notes clearly and as fast as you can at the same time. But answering a question and writing down a note fast are not the same thing right? When you write down something someone is reading you are not using much of your brain power. But when you are writing an answer your brain must think of an answer, logically arrange it and then you make sentences to write them down. It's a much more complex process. This skill again comes through the tip I mentioned in the previous paragraph. When you have mastered a topic and went through all past paper questions you know how to answer this question right in front of you.. You will mechanically form an answer. They might come up with new words and phrases to disguise the same old questions but you will be able to quickly understand what they are asking for and write down the solution. You see, human brain is so good at identifying patterns. When you feed it years of questions, the moment it sees the next one it will automatically come up with the answer. Try this and let me know! It works...

So to make a quick summary, decide the questions at home and master those topics, learn to write faster and practice practice practice! That's the key!

Also guys don't forget to check my YouTube channel (HERE) and follow me on instagram (ruviash) !💜💛
Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-6113430337566007292022-02-04T01:46:00.000+05:302022-02-04T01:46:01.096+05:30What I learned in my 20's

I have spent more than half of the second decade of my life and one thing I learned was that the life changes rapidly after 20. Suddenly you get a lot of responsibilities on your shoulders and it may seem like everybody else have figured everything out and you are still the same old you. If you are feeling the same, this is for you.
When you are in 20s people expect a lot of things from you. To graduate with flying colours, find a job that pays you well, find your significant other, get married, make babies, buy a vehicle.. the list is endless. Suddenly for some people it becomes a competition. Especially with social media where people post almost everything that goes in their lives, you feel the urge to catch up and live the perfect life the other people are living in. But trust me, everybody is struggling and everybody presents their best version to the public. The person who bought the vehicle is struggling to pay the loan, the perfect couple on Facebook may be fighting and the insecurity is forcing them to appear perfect in public, the person with the job might be having depression. You never know. You might be envying someone else while that person envies the life they think you have. I can give you a good example. People envy others when they move to another country, but here I am envying people living in my country because they live with their loved ones and I am alone here 5200 miles away from them. What you have to understand is that is what life is. Everything has a price. It's the opportunity cost.

The second most important thing is that because of all of the above reasons I mentioned people are unnecessary stressed out and it could make them dump that stress on you. For an example I have seen people making others feel bad about their achievements just because they have insecurities about themselves. Do not let anyone make you feel small. Just know why they are doing it, smile and move on. Never ever let anyone look down on you.

Learn to be happy by yourself. Never jump into relationships unless you are happy and stable. My idea of a strong person is that no matter what happens, no matter who are with you, you should have a livelihood. Never be a dependent. When you have a path of life and you are content with yourself, everything else will fall into places.

If you feel like you are falling behind in life and others are moving forward, believe in the process. Even if you are slow, you are still moving forward. Destination is what matters. Trust the process and move on with your pace. You will get everything you deserve!
Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-49688634309901335652021-11-18T20:00:00.002+05:302021-11-20T17:40:03.284+05:30How to stay focused during online lectures/ classes

As the new norm in many countries, including Sri Lanka is the online education I think it is important to talk about this topic. Even though it is a bit too late to write this I thought of publishing this anyway. So let me get things straight. You sit behind your computer and in your very cozy room and teacher cannot see you. There are many things that can go wrong in a situation like this. You can watch tv, you can eat, you can even be sleeping and the teacher will not notice. As students we need to optimise the time we have and use it to the max. So now I will point out shortly what we can do to concentrate on the lecture/class.

01. Have your meals and trips to the toilet before the lecture.

This is important because one trip to the kitchen may take hours!

02. Make sure you have everything you need on the table including a bottle of water and even a flask of coffee.

Again saving trips to the kitchen!

03. If possible, get the lecture notes before the lecture and try to study it beforehand.

Most of the time if we know the subject beforehand, it is less likely to zone out. I myself find it easy to concentrate if the professor is speaking something I already know.

04. Have enough sleep.

Having not enough sleep also makes you drowsy all the time. A good nights sleep is never a waste. It actually helps you to absorb the things you studied more. (If you still haven't seen the article I wrote about why sleep is important, click HERE to read it.)

Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-3420312414525047492021-11-11T22:30:00.001+05:302021-11-12T01:41:43.975+05:30How to stop procrastination- A/L edition

Like I always say we all procrastinate. Nobody can be productive 24x7 throughout their entire life time right? For Advanced Level student the consequences of procrastination is life changing as the exam will most probably decide the path of your life for a next couple of decades. (I am not saying your entire life depends on this, but we don't need to look at our past and regret, do we?) So today let me tell you about how to minimize being lazy and get work done,

01. Remove all the distractions and focus on goals.

I'm very serious. Do not get yourself into relationships... (I am not against those. You can have a one if you are good at not texting/ day dreaming 24x7 about that person. Most of us are not, so if you can't control yourself then it is better not to get into a relationship this soon.. The world is not gonna end y'all. There are so many nice guys out there.) Be independent. The way I say it is this. Imagine all your friends, relatives are all gone and there is nobody. Still you should have a way of survival. That is what I call stability. Imagine a future for yourself and make that your goal. Write them down and keep is somewhere you can see. If you are into arts and crafts you can even make a vision board. Or you can simply use canva to make wallpapers for your laptop and mobile phone.

02. Make things organised.

Use planners or journals to keep track of your progress and upcoming assignments, exams etc. When the work you did is visible on a sheet of paper it motivates you to continue doing more. I had two separate books; a to do list book and a things I did book. It was so satisfying to see topics getting crossed out in one book and the other one keeps getting filled.

03. Form study groups.

Have a bunch of friends to discuss the things that are difficult for you and teach other people what you know. Trust me to master any subject teaching someone is the best way. Then only you will understand how much of that you have actually understood.

04. Be competitive.

I use an app called Yeolpumta. It tracks the time we spent on a subject and also it has a feature that doesn't let us use the phone while we are studying. At the end of the day it has a ranking system which ranks all the users in a given country and that motivates my competitive spirit to work more.

05. If you are really really feeling lazy try some study with me videos on YouTube.

Sometimes it's isolation that makes us feel like not working and watching someone study can actually motivate you. With that being said, I recently started a YouTube channel and I post study videos and vlogs about my life there as well. If you like to check that out click HERE.

06. Change the routine

Sometimes when your body is not healthy mind becomes unhealthy too. So if possible workout, at least go out and have some fresh air once in a while. Drink plenty of water and avoid unnecessary amounts of sugar and carbs. Try to eat healthy and have a balanced diet.

If you are constantly feeling like you are stuck in a place and unable to make yourself work, headaches, muscle pain, fatigue, sadness etc then there is a good chance you are having a burnout and may need to consult a professional. If you have such symptoms please go to a doctor as soon as possible.

Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-72031705863002273922021-11-03T17:34:00.000+05:302021-11-04T01:19:06.577+05:30How to lose weight!

I'm a person who doesn't judge people depending on how they look, but we all are not the same. Sometimes we have our own standards for our bodies and sometimes there are people who bully us into thinking that we look ugly. Whatever the case is, this is for people who are trying to lose some weight. I was struggling with weight for years.. I was called names and being compared to other people. I tried many different things, had cried myself to sleep and hated for being stuck in a very stubborn body. Today I am in the body I always wanted. The kind of body everybody dreams of (this feels like bragging, but hell yeah I earned it... So). So I thought of openly talking about it.

Everybody knows the simplest explanation for losing weight, a calorie deficit, but we also know that it's not as simple as that... And let me tell you, I wasn't a person who ate a lot. And why wasn't I losing weight no matter what I did? Where was the problem? To understand what is happening I researched a lot and even consulted a doctor. The problem was with my metabolism. I had a very slow metabolism and oestrogen dominance on top of that! So today I will share you what I learned and hopefully you will find this helpful.

I had very stubborn arm fat and my arms were big in proportion when compared to my body and the reason was oestrogen dominance. I avoided all soy products and stopped using plastic water bottles and plates etc and finally got my results.

Working out regularly and eating healthy food with a healthy routine is the best combo when it comes to losing weight. But the process takes time! You can't expect to lose 1kg within a week and get discouraged! It takes time girl. Trust the process!!!

The most important tip of all is don't measure the weight! measure your dimensions instead! The reason is 1kg of fat = 1kg of muscle. So if you lose fat and gained muscles you will not see a difference in weight. But the volume of 1kg of fat >>> volume of 1kg of muscles. So you will definitely see a difference in body dimensions. Keep track of the dimensions and you will see what I'm talking about!

Always add more green vegetables to your diet and drink plenty of water. Have your dinner hours before you go to sleep. ( I take mine at 6.30pm)

Have your vitamins. Especially vitamin D, but I advise you to meet a dietician first and follow their instructions!

I hope this short article helped you today.. And if you have any suggestions please let me know!

Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-37490238202919775802021-10-27T11:41:00.002+05:302021-10-27T11:41:36.092+05:30My YouTube channel

Hello everyone! And then we tell ourselves "What a bullshit is that, everybody has this and that and nothing ever happens to me!" Well I am not gonna say we all have different timelines today. But I'm gonna tell you how to get everything you ever wanted by doing just a very simple couple of things. You have to trust the process!

First, learn from where the thought "I am not enough" comes from. Because the thought behind comparing yourself to someone is the idea that we are not enough. Is it your appearance that makes you feel not enough when compared to another person? Is it the financial status? Or grades? Identify the root cause that is causing the problem. I am not talking about jealousy here. It could be a simple "I wish if I was.." or an "I wish if I had..." that is drowning all your mental energy and feels like an unworthy person. I am here to help you with being that person and feeling good about yourself.

Acknowledge the problem. "I am feeling like this because I feel like I am overweight". "I feeling like I am stupid because I cannot get good grades". Acknowledge your feelings, do not try to run away from your own thought process. It is very tiring to run from your own thoughts. It consumes all your energy to distract yourself from the constant thoughts of negative self talk. So listen to yourself for once and try to understand the feelings.

Now that you know the problem let's solve it. Comparing and being miserable about something will not do any good because you are not taking any steps towards actually winning it. So let us first change our mindset. Instead of focusing all your energy on the missing thing from your life, lets focus on what actually you have in your hand right now. Well you might think you are fat and ugly, but have you noticed how good your skin/ hair is? How kind actually your heart is? Maybe you can't afford to have food in a 5 star restaurant but think of the good people you are surrounded with! Focus on little things in life and be grateful for them. Practicing gratitude always makes your life abundant. The more grateful for things you are, the more you get. I know this by experience. So trust me here.

Since now you are filled with all this positivity lets see how to get to the bottom of your desire. If it's about the body image what can we do about it? Can we change your diet and lifestyle? It is going to take a long time, obviously. You will reach your desired weight and body with time, but do not focus on it negatively. Change does not happen overnight. It is a process that takes time and needs patience. You will be a little bit better tomorrow than today and you will be much better in a week. In months and years you will look back and be surprised how much you have changed. It is hard..You will feel like giving up from time to time, this is why being grateful for everything is important. When there is positivity and positive energy in your life, when you believe in yourself and your strength everything happens so fast. You are beautiful, you are intelligent and you are financially stable. You will be the best version of yourself and you will have the best life anyone can ever have. There are two paths to follow after A/Ls.. A job or pursuing higher education. Since I did an undergraduate degree I can only talk about that. If you decide to go for tertiary education instead of directly applying for a job with A/Ls, the next question arises. Where to go? Before that actually there is one more important thing people usually miss and of course later in life they regret. What kind of a job do you wish to have after bachelors? Will you stay in academia or want to join the industry? Your answer to that will help you in determining your university.
01. What do you like to do?

This should be the very first question. What is the subject or area that you like, you will have no problem doing it for the rest of your life? Trust me this is very important because you will be with this particular subject and you will make a living out of it until you die one day. So make sure you don't hate it and you are actually doing it because you love doing it and engaging with the subject is not a chore.

02. What kind of a job do you need?

If you want to stay in academia, your university world ranking, accreditation and research experience matters. I can't stress this enough. ( Later I will upload a new post about graduate studies and how to pick countries) On the other hand in the current job market the most value is given to your skill. If you can prove that you are a hardworking skilled individual with an industry oriented degree you are good to go. So if you intend to become an academic you better pick a university with a high rank, accreditation and a degree that offers a good research component with great supervisors. In Sri Lanka currently the University of Peradeniya and the University of Colombo tops the rankings. I cannot talk about the UOP but I can about UOC. And then you also have the option of choosing a foreign university for the Bachelors. I will come to that in a minute.

So first of all the University of Colombo, the prestigious university that everybody dreams of. There are 7 faculties the Computer school and many other institutions that comes under UOC. Not only in UOC but also other government universities the two types of degrees I mentioned before can be seen; job oriented and academia oriented. For an example if you do medicine or engineering you will end up as a doctor or an engineer. You still have the option of doing research in those fields but you will most probably end up having a career in those fields. When it comes to the Science faculty it is not that straightforward. If you come to science faculty to end up doing a job in the industry you really have to horn the skills that will be required by the companies. On the other hand if you need to end up being a scientist you will have to maintain your grades damn well, do research get them published and work harder than ever.

03. Foreign degrees?

So umm foreign degrees.. You have 2 options. You can pay and get enrolled in a foreign university if you can afford it or apply for scholarships( There are a lot of scholarships for Sri Lankan students by several countries. Please refer to the ministry of higher education website.) But the very first question you should ask yourself is what is the plan here? Are you going to settle in that particular country or come back to Sri Lanka? If so is the degree is accredited and has a recognition in Sri Lanka? If you are planning on staying, what are the policies in that country? Is it immigrant friendly? Do a research about everything beforehand to make sure you are not going to waste 3 or 4 years of your life and money.

Since I was also searching for foreign degrees I know a thing or two about them. I have even seen many teachers advising students that studies are more important than sleep, but is it? In my life sleeping is the number one priority. I'm not even kidding. If I go to an exam without sleep my performance will be worse than a no study proper sleep situation. Sleep actually has a huge impact on how we perform and our levels of concentration. Lets dig in to find out how that works.

First of all sleep deprivation makes you hard to focus on anything, and secondly sleep helps to retain the stuff you studied. So my advice is to first have a proper sleep cycle. Our body produces melatonin when we are asleep. It is called the hormone of darkness because it is produced as a response to darkness. Melatonin is very important in maintaining your metabolism and sleep cycles. It is only synthesised when we are asleep and it resets our body. That is why we are advised not to use screens before sleep. You have to stop using screens at least two hours before you sleep and always sleep early and try to have a minimum of 8 hours sleep.

Sleep deprivation will make you to wake up exhausted, burn outs, lack of concentration and not able to memorize anything you studied. As I always say, maintaining your good health alongside studies is very important because who wants to get sick during the exams, right?

Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-4660799803295019442021-09-19T15:02:00.001+05:302021-09-19T15:02:15.817+05:30From Paris...

After a break of weeks I am writing again, but not from Sri Lanka, but from France. And now finally after going around and around I am finally in the path to becoming a Nuclear Engineer. After trying different universities for different subjects I finally got accepted to Nuclear Engineering at a top 20 university. It was quite a struggle to get through rejections and finally finally get accepted to the university I never thought that would accept me...

Life is not easy and it throws us twisted plots and curve balls at us, but in the end we get what we deserve. So today I thought of answering your question. How to be a TA or an RA. I will start with TA because I was a one for a year.

First of all lets talk about the job role. A TA is responsible for doing all the practicals, marking the reports, invigilating exams and conducting tutorials. It can be undergraduate or sometimes postgraduate. You get paid around 40000 LKR in many government and private universities. Usually after completing the undergraduate degree you can apply for the position in the department you studied and based on the qualifications and the number of vacancies you will be offered a position. In most of the departments the maximum duration is 1 year.

When it comes to RA positions it is not very straightforward as TA positions. Most of the time the RA posts are offered to graduate students who are conducting research. However it is possible to join an existing research team as a RA if there are vacancies available. So if you want to be an RA you have to stay on alert about the vacancies and apply as soon as you spot a one. You might need good experience in doing research and handling necessary laboratory equipment.

If I am to talk about the pros and cons I would say it has both, but it depends. For an example if you are planning on going for higher education after the bachelors degree a TA or an RA position is ideal because it lets you work during the time gap between the completion of the undergraduate degree and enrolment of the graduate degree. And you can use that time to do another research and add to your portfolio as well. On the other hand if you are someone who wants to join the industry I would say it will be a bad idea to become a TA because it is not going to get you to a career path. It is better to focus on a job that will offer you a career instead of becoming a teaching assistant for a temporary period of time.

Thank you for your emails and please let me know if I should write more on certain topics.. It's a very long process and it's gonna be very hectic and depressing as well. First of all what is a foreign ministry certified document? They check your original documents and gives you another document with a QR code that says your document is an original and anybody can check it using the QR code. You can take any number of photocopies of the document and those are valid for a year.

To where should you go to get them certified?

The branch where they certify documents is in the 3rd floor of the Ceylinco Building which is in the opposite side of the World Trade Center. And you have to go there as early as possible because there is gonna be a loooooooong que. They issue a token and it's very important not to lose it as they will check that before taking you in. And make sure to go early as possible too because if you go there by 7.15 your number will be around 220 and if you go by 6.15 it will be around 90. They only issue numbers unto 400s. So you get my point. Go there at 6am if possible. And after standing in a loooong que for about 4 hours finally they will take you in. At the first counter your documents are checked and another token is issued. You will be asked to sit in a waiting area and go to another counter based on your second token number. You will have to pay 800 rupees per document.

Birth Certificate

You will need to provide them with an original copy of your birth certificate that is taken recently and an English translated copy. You can get copies of the birth certificate from the office at the ground floor of the passport office in Baththaramulla and get them translated at the Registrar General Department. (They take 7 days for the translation and will cost 600 rupees per copy)

Degree certificate and transcript

You will first have to get photocopies of the two and get them true copied by the University and take them with the originals.

O/L and A/L certificates

First you have to request the certificates through https://certificate.doenets.lk website and in there you have an option to send the certificates to the foreign ministry. You have to click that option because unless the Department of Examinations directly send them the certificates, foreign ministry will not certify them.

Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-51516943823537325392021-07-29T23:44:00.001+05:302021-08-23T23:57:37.930+05:30Five second rule and reverse counting

You want to get something done, but feels like you can't? Well this rule will make you do it whether your goal is to lose weight, to study more or to wake up early. The person behind this rule is Mel Robbins and in her book she define 5 second rule as " If you have an impulse to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill the idea". I will explain how I follow that advice in my own way and you can adapt it to your requirement as well.

In my case whenever I need to get something done I tell myself now its 6.05pm...I will wait till 6.15... I will wait 10 more minutes... And that 10 minutes never come. When I heard about the 5 second rule I was in bed trying to get up. So I decided to use it with reversed counting. Instead of saying 1,2,3,4,5 and get up I counted 5,4,3,2,1... and I suddenly jumped out of bed. Later I got to know it has a psychological explanation. When we start counting from 1 it can go up to infinity, but when we reverse count it always comes to 0 and we feel like time is up and we have to move.

Now whenever I need to get something done, and I don't feel like doing it I use the reverse counting methods. Trust me it works..Always.

Try this method and let me know if it worked for you!

Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-42884273262027559902021-07-22T01:04:00.107+05:302021-08-19T01:32:43.099+05:30Brain food- Food that boosts memory and concentration

As I always we are what we eat it is really really important to maintain our health as students. So today I am going to be talking about food that will aid you in studies. The nutrients found in these help to boost memory and concentration and try to add these to your diet more often. For those who are interested I will mention the research papers as well.

01. Berries

Berries contain flavonoids that improves blood flow to the brain, improve communication between brain cells and helps brain cells to make new connections. (01-02)

02. Fish

Fish containing Omega 3 improves the structure of neurons. A Japanese study done with 76 adults showed a correlation with fish intake and better memory performance and better brain health. (03)

03. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate also contains flavonoids and as mentioned below it benefits us by improving neural pathways. Cocoa intake also reduces brain fatigue and improve the blood flow to the brain as well. (04)

04. Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits contains flavonoids as well.

05. Nuts

Nuts contain vitamin E and Zinc. Vitamin E protects cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals and nuts are an excellent study snack too. Sunflower seeds, almonds and hazelnut contains the highest amounts of Vitamin E among all other nuts.

06. Eggs

Eggs contain Vitamin B6, B12 and folic acid and these prevent the brain shrinking and delay cognitive decline. Apart from that eggs are a source of Selenium too. Selenium <span style="caret-color: rgb(35, 31, 32); color: #231f20; font-family: "Proxima Nova", Arial, helvetica, system-ui, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; text-align: left;"> is involved in coordination, memory, cognition, and motor performance.

07. Avocados

Avocados contain Lutein, a carotenoid that helps brain function. It is also a source of unsaturated fats that helps reduce high blood pressure.

08. (For some of you not fun at all.. I know) But there are times that no matter how we feel we just have to do it. So in this article I will first focus on tips to avoid feeling sleepy to just get this one project/ essay done and then I will move onto the topic of how to not be sleepy in the long run.

So you have an exam tomorrow or a deadline and you want to get it done without falling asleep? Here are my quick tips. (If you are looking for a sustainable method skip this and move on to the next part)

Caffeine- It's my go to to pull an all nighter

Dark chocolate- Not only it will keep you awake but it will keep you calm too

Movements- Move you legs and arms from time to time even while you are sitting

Be in a well lit room- Well our bodies are designed to respond to environmental stimulus. So dark equals it's time to sleep

Avoid the bedroom- In our brains bedroom is associated with sleeping. So no studies in bed or the bedroom

Take a shower- You will feel fresh and ready after a warm/ cold bath

Now lets talk about not being sleepy whenever you think of studying(aka lazy) or when you try to study. First of all we have to figure out the reason for feeling sleepy always. Is it that you are tired all the time? or you tend to procrastinate and as a result feeling sleepy?

I. Extreme Fatigue

If you are tired all the time it could be something physical. So my advice is to seek medical help and to eat healthy, take vitamins (especially you could be lacking vitamin D if you don't go outside enough) and be physically active.

II.Procrastination/Being lazy

Just like I always say we don't like to do difficult things, whenever we feel like something is gonna drain all our energy we tend to procrastinate. So we have to trick our brain into thinking that this is not a big deal like it seems and it's a doable teeny tiny task. There are a couple of ways to do that. First one is to think of the consequences of not studying... That will motivate you for the day. To keep motivated in the long run there are several rituals(not religious stuff) I used to follow and still do, which I will teach you in an upcoming post. The next method is to breakdown the task into smaller steps and taking a step by step approach. Also the study environment is quite important. For an example like I mentioned before our brain has assigned tasks to each and every one of rooms in our houses. Don't do something somewhere that's not designed to do that thing. For an example if you eat, sleep and study on bed that is not gonna help you at all. Bed is to sleep and sleep only. That is how our brain recognises it. Use separate rooms/ places for separate tasks.

So that's it for today guys! See you soon with another post. If you have any suggestions comment below or email me. Stay safe and happy studying!

Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-31798225293334514672021-07-05T18:00:00.002+05:302021-07-05T18:00:00.192+05:30The Little House Series

Growing up, the Little House series was my favourite. It is indeed a childhood memory I hold very close to my heart. Even though I read thousands of books after that, still those words are so much alive in my head. I don't know the reason I cherished the narrative of a little girl living in the 19th century, but the descriptions of nature, the lifestyle of a strongly bonded family, comforted me as a child.

Little House is a series of autobiographical novels written by Laura Ingalls Wilder(1867-1957) that describes life in the 19th century United States settlements. Adventure, calm tenacity in the face of hardship, the excitement of the unknown, and the ability to re-establish oneself wherever one may land are all themes that run through her stories. Her father and mother are Charles and Caroline Ingalls, and she had three siblings; Mary, Carrie and Grace. In 1869, they moved from Wisconsin to the Indian country in Kansas after stopping in Missouri. They later moved back to Wisconsin, and these memories inspired the novels "Little House in the Big Woods" and "Little House on the Prairie." In 1874 they moved to Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where they settled on the banks of the Plum creek. After two seasons of crop failure, they relocated to Iowa.

They kept moving throughout her childhood, and she eventually became a teacher two months before her 16th birthday. However, her teaching career ended when she was 18 years old because of her marriage to her lover, Almonzo Wilder. I can tell you the whole story in detail here, but I highly recommend you to read. I will put a link to a website I found to get the pdf versions of the books. In 1954 American Library Association inaugurated a lifetime award for children's writers named after "Wilder", of which she was the first recipient. In 2018 it was renamed " the children's literacy legacy award" because the association perceived Laura's work are biased against Native and African Americans.

There was a controversy around these books and even discussions about banning the books. In my opinion, you cannot erase history; you can't undo what's done centuries ago. Laura's narrative is an excellent representation of the sentiments of the time. She is expressing her memories and thoughts as a child who lived through the conflicts between the natives and white settlers. Like always, there are two sides to a story, and this is hers, the viewpoint of a white child. Frankly, I enjoyed it as a kid and as an adult too. I find how she brought the beautiful landscapes and the warmth of a family to life heart touching, and I am thankful for Laura for gifting me some beautiful memories.

-From a Brown girl who enjoyed Little House
Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-55953915813525524682021-06-28T06:00:00.001+05:302021-06-29T09:19:33.404+05:30Recreated voice of a mummy
Voice of Nesyamun, a priest that lived 3000 years ago during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses XI, has been brought to life by a group of scientists from Royal Holloway, the University of London and the University of York and Leeds Museum. His body was first unwrapped in 1824, and since then, it has been tested several times using X ray, CT scans, endoscopy and even histology. As this is the only mummy to have been dated from the Ramses XIs reign, it provides essential insights about that era.
The medical examinations revealed he had been suffering from gum disease, and his teeth have severely deteriorated. He is believed to have died in his 50s, possibly following a severe allergic reaction.
Inscriptions on his coffin showed that his dying wish was to be able to speak after his death and 3000 years after his death, his wish came true. After taking precise measurements of his extant vocal tract with the aid of CT scans, the scientists created a 3D printed model. By using that they were able to synthesize a vowel sound. This is also the first time a technique to be developed to recreate the sound of a dead.

In the summer of 1993 he was attending a summer camp very close to their house. The road was a dead end and there were no roads to cross. Still his mother took him to the summer camp and came back everyday. In the morning of 2nd August 1993, Dalton started throwing a fit and Derrick asked if he could go alone so mom could take care of the younger brother. His mom agreed to let him go alone as it was a tight knit community and it was just so close to his house. In the evening Doreen went to the summer camp to pick Derrick only to find out he never arrived.. Panicked mom called the police immediately. Police started searching for him and found his body beaten to a pulp, near a small patch of woods closer to the summer camp. His autopsy revealed that he had multiple skull fractures, cerebral swelling and contusions, extreme tearing in chest tissues and several other injuries to his organs.

Over the next few days police interviewed more than 500 people and on 5th of April 13 years old Eric Smith walked to police station with his mother to offer information about the case. Eric also attended the summer camp and on the morning of the 2nd of August he was sent home due to his bad behaviour. He claimed on his way home he saw Derrick, but soon police realised he couldn't have seen Derrick from the angle he was claiming, but he described Derricks clothes and the lunch bag he was carrying with him to the detail. When the officers questioned him he suddenly became emotional and said " You think I killed him, Don't you?" to which the police said No. He further said he is not the kind of a person to kill, hurt or sexually molest anyone.

Upon hearing the details a lady in the neighbourhood conducted an experiment. They found the banana in Derricks lunch bag smashed near the crime scene which implied the killer didn't like bananas. So she invited all the kids over and asked to put bananas in their ice cream and the only one who was against it was Eric. Soon after this, Eric confessed murdering Derrick to his mother, grandfather and great grand father.

Eric was the orange haired freckled kid with glasses and everybody bullied him. He had a tendency to get very angry and when he asked for help from his father he advised him to punch something. After being sent home from the summer camp he was very angry and sadly poor Derrick was the one at sight. Now I am going to quote the case file to describe what actually happened that day and it is very brutal. So if you are a sensitive person please skip the next paragraph as it is very brutal.

"On Monday, August 2, 1993, four-year-old Derrick Robie, carrying his lunch in a canvas bag, left his home to walk to a nearby park to participate in a recreation program. Several minutes later, on McCoy Street near the park, defendant, who was riding his bicycle, encountered Derrick, whom he knew from the recreation program. According to the oral and written statements defendant gave to police one week later, defendant called out, "Hey, kid," prompting Derrick to turn around, at which point defendant "knew I wanted to take him someplace and hurt him." Defendant asked Derrick if he wanted to go to the recreation program by way of a "short cut," but Derrick said that he wasn't "supposed to." Defendant repeatedly assured Derrick, "It's okay, I'm right here," then got off his bicycle and led Derrick through a wooded vacant lot adjacent to the park. As the boys reached a secluded area behind an overgrown hedgerow, defendant put down his bicycle, let Derrick go ahead of him and then reached around and choked Derrick's neck with his right arm. Derrick dropped his lunch bag and kicked his feet and swung his fists in an attempt to get away. Defendant started to release Derrick in order to readjust his grip and choke Derrick with his hands, but because Derrick began to "gasp some air," defendant "squeezed harder." After about 30 seconds, Derrick no longer made any noise, so defendant "figured he was dead" and laid him on the ground. When Derrick again began "gasping for air", defendant dumped Derrick's lunch on the ground, picked up a paper napkin, and stuffed it in Derrick's mouth. Defendant then attempted to stuff a plastic sandwich bag in Derrick's mouth, but pulled it out when Derrick bit defendant's finger. Defendant picked up a small rock, kneeled over Derrick, and struck him with it three times on the right side of the head; picked up a large rock and, with both hands, threw it three times on Derrick's head; then picked up another large rock and threw it twice onto Derrick's chest and once onto his midsection. At that point, defendant took the drink from Derrick's lunch and poured it on Derrick's face. He then pulled down Derrick's pants, took a stick, flipped over Derrick's body, and "put the stick up his butt." Defendant flipped over the body again, dragged it several feet to a rockpile, and left the area on his bike. After about five minutes, defendant returned to the scene to check the body. As defendant subsequently related to police, he wanted to "double, triple check to make sure" that the victim was dead: "I was worried if he wasn't there he might say something however I figured if he's dead, and I believed he was, I won't have to worry about anything." Defendant then left the scene."

Eric was convicted to second degree murder and sentenced to a minimum of 9 years to lifetime in prison. He was held in a Juvenile facility for 3 years and then transferred to an open prison for young adults. He was then sent to several prisons and he was eligible for parole after 9 years in prison. For the 10th time in 2020 he was denied parole.

After he was arrested his sister came forward and claimed she was sexually abused by their step father and most probably Eric was too. It's also said as a kid Eric always had issues; once he killed their neighbours cat. However he sounds remorseful in his interviews. In his 2014 parole hearing he said "He didn't deserve anything that I did to him; no one deserved that kind of violence. There are some bizarre unansweredquestions around this whole case and different people have different opinions.

Diane, her husband, her two children and 3 nieces have been camping at the Hunter Lake campground in Parksville, New York. On July 26th 2009 around 9.30 they left the campsite; Diane with children in her 2003 red Ford minivan and her husband Daniel in their pickup truck with the family dog. On their way home to West Babylon minivan made several stops, first at a McDonald's and several gas stations. However at 11.37am, Diane called her brother to tell him that they are being delayed due to the traffic. While she was calling her brother, several other calls were being made by other drivers who were on the highway. They reported a minivan driving recklessly, flashing headlights, honking and tailgating. Other witnesses who reported seeing a woman bending over vomiting with a red minivan pulled over to the side of the highway around 11.45am .A1 12.58pm her brother receives another call and this time it is from his daughter, 8 years old Emma. She stated that Aunt Diane is not okay and she can't see or speak clearly. Diane then took the phone and confirmed it. Her brother, Hance asked her to pull over as he will come and meet them. He called her several times on his way but she did not answer. Her phone was later found on the highway. At 1.30pm a series of 911 calls were coming in about a minivan entering towards Taconic State Parkway's exit ramp. There were signs " Do not enter", "One way", but the driver of the minivan didn't seem to care. She entered the highway and was driving around 121-137km/h in the wrong direction. After driving 2.7kms she faced a head-on collision with a 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer killing eight people..74 years old Dan Longo, 81 years old Micheal Bastardi and his 49 years old son Guy were killed instantly alongside his daughter and two of his nieces. Diane's other niece died later in that day after being hospitalised.

Two people who witnessed the crash pulled Diane out of the wreckage and they also noticed a giant broken bottle of Absolute Vodka. They tried to pull the kids out but they were already dead and none of the kids were wearing seat belts. The only survivor was Diane's son, Bryan.

The crash drew everybody's attention as Diane Schuler was considered a perfect PTA mom. Even though they found a bottle of Vodka in the vehicle nobody observed that she was drunk. Her co campers said the morning she drove away she was sober. The employees at the Mcdonalds' also did not witness anything unusual with her. and she carried on a coherent and a lengthy conversation while she was waiting for her order. The last footage of her is that when she went to the gas station and she was trying to buy painkillers (Tylenol). The gas son employee said in a news report " I know for a fact she wasn't drunk when she came into the station". Diane however couldn't buy Tylenol as they were sold out.

However on August 4th medical examiners released her toxicology report which stated that she had three times the legal blood alcohol limit in her system when the crash happened. They also found out that Diane had high THC levels (marijuana). Four days after the report was released Daniel Schuler held a press conference denying her use of drugs or drinking. He consistently denied his wife's substance abuse. He admitted she occasionally smoked marijuana for her insomnia but she never did drugs or alcohol around her children or at the camp. His consistent denial caused issues to the family of those who killed in the TrailBlazer and it was followed by several legal battles. Diane's brother who lost all of his daughters also filed a lawsuit against Daniel Schuler. There are several theories to the crash as this is believed out of character to suddenly go from a perfect caring mom to a killer alcoholic but a toxicology report never lies. For some unknown reason she decided to get high and drive recklessly. Her husband to this date denies her behaviour.

As a result of this crash New York Governor David Patterson proposed a law making it a felony to drive with underaged passengers while intoxicated and the law was passed few months later.

Jackie Hance, the mother who faced every parents worst nightmare went through an unimaginable pain. They were grieving for years and finally there was a ray of hope. She gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Kasey Rose in October 2011. She also wrote a book about her experience, I'll see you again by Jackie Hance. I for sure am gonna read that book.

So what do you think happened to her? Why did she turned 180 degrees and decided to go on this murderous journey instead of peacefully going home?

Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-74049784491656169972021-06-10T18:00:00.002+05:302021-06-10T18:00:00.236+05:30Life of a vegetarian

People become vegetarians for many reasons; ethics, religion, health issues, hormones in animals, environmental concerns and the list goes on. I first started being a vegetarian in 2014. Why? Because I lost the very first animal who loved me. His name was Dotty... A pretty black and white fur ball.. It was a hit and run kinda thing. He was flattened in the middle of the road. He was a kitten and has never ever been to the road before. And the view of dead animals in roadsides is a pretty common thing. Why? Because people don't care. Hitting an animal and a human is not the same according to them. Losing him hit me really hard and it made me think of how the value of a life is relative... If we are not attached to the dead one, we don't feel a thing. But that doesn't mean we can go and kill someones loved ones. That made me feel horrible for eating all the animals for 19 years. And I became a vegetarian. After one year my health went downhill due to lack of proteins in my diet and I had be a non veg again. In 2018 January 1st I became a vegetarian again and still am a one. This time I did it right. I have a nutritionist and my diets are balanced. I workout and do regular health checkups. I want to be a vegan but we don't have a lot of vegan options in this country. So as soon as I get some options I am planning to be a one. Let's talk about this centuries long veg vs non veg debate.

The first point is lack of nutrition. It was traditionally believed that by being a vegetarian you are lacking many nutrients that are necessary for bodily functions, but recent research proves otherwise. According to Harvard Health plant based eating not only is nutritionally sufficient but also prevents many chronic illnesses. It is true, because of the hormones the mass producing farms are using. Last night my mom was watching TV and she said due to the pandemic people who raise pigs are in trouble and I asked why. She said they cannot keep pigs alive for more than 2 months. I chuckled saying " It's not like live animals expire". She said they do. I was like what?? She said in the industry those pigs are getting fat and fat due to the hormones and they should be killed by 2 months, otherwise due to the excessive weight they end up having several diseases and no longer viable.. And she said another programme revealed about the cruelty of the people who kills those animals. They beat the pigs into a pulp...Until the skin is cracked and pigs are unconscious. Wait for two days so pigs are swollen( hence the weight is increased) and then they kill. How cruel is that? My heart broke. People, if you don't eat, they don't kill. How can you do that to someone? Imagine the pain they go through. And the seafood you eat.. Those animals swallow micro plastics and through the food chain you eat them too. It's not healthy. I mean obviously we eat poison too, through insecticides and pesticides that are used in vegetables and fruit. But at least it's lesser than that of a meat eater. I do not buy most of the vegetables as we have a garden at home where we use organic fertilizers. So I am only getting exposed to only a small amount of harmful substances. Go green people!

The hardest thing of being a vegetarian is having group meals like office lunches. It's worse when you are the only vegetarian in the bunch. A couple of months ago I even got a food poisoning. There was this farewell lunch and they had ordered seafood fried rice. I said it's fine I will remove the seafood and eat because I don't wanna be a nuisance and I wasn't even allergic to seafood before, but good lord, when we were on our way back my eyes started to swell and a friend immediately took me to get meds. This happened another instance where I ate fries and I wondered how. My friend said it could be because they used the same oil they used to fry some fish. And sometimes it's challenging when going out to eat because Sri Lanka is not that vegetarian friendly. You don't find a lot of vegetarian options in most of the menus. But thankfully there are some vegan places too(which I will cover in future posts if you are interested in). All the people in my inner circle are vegetarians. So it's very easy for us to hangout.

The worst part is criticism. Seriously I mean! It's fine if you want to eat meat, but don't try to confront me... I never tell anyone not to eat meat or become a vegetarian because that is none of my business, but me being a vegetarian is my choice. Don't argue with me why I shouldn't be a one! I understand the pain of losing someone and I empathise it. If you feel like animals are just dumb kilos of meat that are here for us to eat, then you really really have a serious problem. I have been living with animals.. a lot of them. For the past few years I have lived with more than 200 cats, treated them, played with them, cuddled them.. and it's not just household pets. I have treated wild animals as well. They have feelings and cognitive abilities. They feel love, and they love us back. Animals are here to share the world with us, not to be eaten by us. Learn to empathize, Please...

Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-89331244239317927402021-06-07T18:00:00.006+05:302021-06-07T18:00:00.212+05:30A teenager dug his backyard for 6 years a after a fight with mom

Six years ago, an angry teenage boy in Spain decided to dig a hole in the backyard after a fight with his mother. Fourteen years old Andres Canto's mother wanted him to change his clothes before leaving with his friends which he refused. As a punishment she ordered him to stay home. Angry Canto decided to vent his anger by digging a hole. He grabbed his grandfathers pickaxe and started digging which then became an obsession. He used his evenings after school for his newly obsessed excavation project and he even started learning about different methods. The pace of this project drastically changed when his best friend, Andreau also joined with his pneumatic drill and the duo spent 14 hours a week digging almost 10 feet.

They removed the soil initially by using a bucket, but as they go deeper and deeper they developed a pulley system. During an interview he said that during the first three years he wanted to see how deep they could dig, and then they got the idea to turn it into a liveable place. When he starts building rooms, he made the ceilings into arch shapes and used columns to prevent it from collapsing. Currently his newly built home consists of two rooms, a heating system, wifi and a music system. He is planning to further expand his project in the future.

You can see more photos and videos of his house in his twitter.

There are tons of things to do, you want to do, but you can't just make yourself start doing them. If this is you right now, then this is for you.

So we start from baby steps. You obviously can't motivate yourself enough to go and write that 5000 word essay. First you clean the room or desk. Simply start by making your bed. Marie Kondo says " From the moment you start tidying, you will be compelled to reset your life. As a result, your life will start to change." which is true btw. Motivation and work isn't linear. It's a cycle. Sometimes motivation makes you work and sometimes just by working on random something gives you motivation to continue. What we are lacking now is the first type of motivation. So we are making baby steps to get ourselves do something and use that motivation to work our way through.

The next thing is to get out of your pyjamas. I know they are comfy but your brain identifies pyjamas to be associated with bed. So when you. change into something else you are more likely to work. Most importantly you need fresh air and exercise. So if the conditions permit (Covid 19 lockdowns etc) go out for a walk. Trust me fresh air can make a huge impact on ones mood. So does exercises. When you are physically active your brain is more on alert. Doing these little changes will make you feel like you actually did something.

Finally have this ideology of pain and pleasure. It is developed by Sigmund Freud and it simply says people make choices to avoid pain or make choices to gain pleasure. We are using that principle for our gain. Also a recent research suggested that when we think of our future self we are referring to them as another person. That's why we tend to procrastinate. Our brain perceives the person writing that essay on the deadline as another person. So next time when we feel like not doing that essay until last minute and watching Netflix imagine the scenario and possible pain you will have to face. You wait until last minute and then you don't have the notes, you text your friend but your friend is already asleep. So you fail the exam, that affects your gpa and you lose the class by one decimal point which causes you to get a rejection from your dream college and the list goes on. I guess that alone is enough to get yourself out there. Use your imagination!
Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-82998721415500161932021-05-31T21:16:00.003+05:302021-06-10T18:11:37.911+05:30The haunted LaLaurie Mansion

Lalaurie mansion is a house that was built in 1800s and it is famous as one of the most haunted houses in New Orleans. This house and its bloody past will surely remind you of how cruel slavery was back in the day. The house is situated in 1140, Royal street and the owner was Delphine LaLaurie. She was born on 19th March 1787 and she was born to a family of five. Her parents moved to the US from Ireland in 1730s and settled down in New Orleans. When she was four years old the Haitian revolution erupted (1791) and several slaveholders including her uncle was killed by the slaves. That incident lead slaveholders to take extreme measures to discipline their slaves.

In 1800 when she was just 13 years old she married a Spanish royal officer and in 1804 he was called to the Spanish court. On the way to Madrid with his now pregnant wife Delphine, he passed away in Havana suddenly. After a couple of days following his death, Delphine gave birth to her daughter, Marie. She returned to New Orleans and got married to a wealthy lawyer named Jean Blanque in 1808. He purchased a house in 409, Royal street ( later known as Villa Blanque) . Blanque had four children with Delphine; Marie Louise Pauline, Louise Marie Laure, Marie Louise Jeanne and Jean Pierre Paulin Blanque. Sadly Jean Blanque also passed away in 1816. In 1825 Delphine married a physician (Leonard Louis Nicholas Lalaurie) as her third husband and it is said that he is much younger than she was. At that time she bought this property at 1140, Royal Street and she built a 2 story mansion with attached slave quarters. She held a very prominent position in the New Orleans community and she was famous for treating slaves nicely. She has freed 2 slaves and was polite to slaves in public. However the funeral registries says something else. It has 12 documented deaths of slaves within 4 years and cause of deaths are not mentioned either. There were also witnesses of one of the slave girls falling to death from the roof when trying to avoid the whipping of Delphine. This incident lead to an investigation and she was forced to forfeit nine slaves. However she used her relatives to buy the slaves back.

On 10th of April 1834, a fire broke during a party and when fire marshals arrived at the scene they found a 70 years old woman chained in the kitchen. She was the cook and she started the fire in an attempt to suicide. She further said that the slaves taken to the room in the second floor never returned back. In fear of this punishments she attempted to kill herself.

When the fire broke out, bystanders had tried to ensure the safety of the slaves and Lalauries has not permitted anyone to do that either. The neighbours who broke down the doors of the slave quarters in an attempt to save the slaves from the fire, saw something absolutely horrendous. There were seven slaves mutilated, suspended by the neck with limns stretched and torn. There is also an account of a spider woman... whose limbs were detached and rearranged as a spider... She was begging them to kill her and end the suffering. Knowing their fate, Lalauries escaped to France and when the story of the abused slaves was widely known, an angry mob destroyed the house. There are accounts of her death in 1849 that she died from a boar hunting accident in France. But in 1930s a sexton to St. Louis cemetery discovered an old copper plate in the cemetery which had " Madame Lalaurie, born Marie Delphine Maccarthy, died in Paris, December 1842" inscribed.

The Lalaurie mansion was in a ruined state after the mob burned it down and it was rebuilt by Pierre Trastour. It was used as a public school, a conservatory for music, an apartment building, a refuge for young delinquents, a bar and a furniture store. It is said that during the time it was an apartment people heard unexplained moans and groans, scratching noises under floorboards, screams, dragging of chains and they even smelled burning human flesh. There is even an account of a man who saw a large black man bound in chains. He was blocking his way and when he attempted to push the black man his hands went right through him. There are so many people who witnessed these biazzare phenomenon and people started calling it a haunted mansion. In April 2007, Nicolas Cage bought the house and it is no longer open to the public.
Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-44683242731899208812021-05-27T18:00:00.123+05:302021-05-27T19:11:51.963+05:30 A guide to IELTS

IELTS is a standard English examination which you are supposed to take if you want admission in a foreign university or to apply for some occupations in foreign countries. I face to IELTS exam last year and based on my experience today I am going to give some tips and websites/ YouTube channels I found useful.

IELTS exam covers all four language skills; reading, listening, writing and speaking and there are several types of IELTS such as IELTS academic, general, UKVI. Since I did the academic one I will be focusing more about that here. Also there are two formats; paper based and computer based. Computer based test comes in handy because in the writing section you can delete things and retype as much as you want to but in a paper based one it is not possible. Also you get your score quickly in the computer based version.

In reading and listening you are faced with MCQs most of the time , you are assigned a band score according to the number of correct answers.

Reading

This part consists of three or four passages and the difficulty gets increased. You are to face 40 questions. If you get 39- 40 you get a band 9.0, 38-37 a band 8.5, 36-35 a band 8.0 etc. So the trick here is they ask questions in an order. If they ask about something in the first sentence as the first question then you will find the answer to the second question next. If you can't find the answer to the second question, omit that and look for the answer for the 3rd question. The answer to the second question lies between the first and third answers. This goes the same for the listening test as well.

Listening

Here you are tested for all the major English accents. You will be given four tasks and the challenge is the audio is only played once. But no worries. As I mentioned in the previous section every question is there in an order. So the trick is to take a look at the next question too. If you hear an answer for the next question that means you have missed the answer to the current one. Do not panic and keep answering to next questions. The first task usually has a dialogue between two people and you are to use the information to fill out forms or tables etc. The second task is a monologue and again you have to use the information to fill out forms etc. Third task is usually more challenging and again it's a dialogue. Task four is a lecture which is difficult in general, but I found the third task more challenging.

Writing

Writing has two parts; first part is to describe charts/tables/maps/ before and after images and the second part is to write an essay. There are again tricks to use to get the maximum score. Usually they give a small description at the beginning of the diagram and the first paragraph should be a paraphrase of the given description. And then they have put 2 or 3 very significant facts/ changes/ increases or decreases for you to recognise. So you should write and overview about them in the 2nd paragraph. In next two paras you should describe them.

In the writing part 2, there are 5 possible types of essays you can get; Opinion, discussion, problem and solution, advantages/ disadvantages, double questions. I will not describe what each and everyone is because I will give links to the websites and channels that describes and was a great help to me in understanding what they are. But in this case again there is a structure to follow to get the maximum score. First you paraphrase, and then give an overview, describe main points in paragraphs and finally a summary,

Speaking

IELTS speaking is a face to face interview with an examiner and your pronunciation, fluency, grammar and vocabulary will be tested. For me this was the most difficult one, because interviews in any language are harder for me as an introvert. I'm not a talkative person in general so it was hard for me. The test has three parts. In the part one the examiner questions you about topics that are familiar to you like your family, town etc. The second part consists of a speech. We are given a card and few minutes to prepare to talk about what's in the card. (The given time is not enough to be prepared of course). In the third part the examiner will continue on a discussion in a given topic.

Useful websites/ channels

IELTS liz - She has a website and a YouTube channel as well.

British council practice tests

IELTS buddy website

E2 IELTS YouTube channel
Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7610589606073497649.post-49027191194832186992021-05-24T18:00:00.003+05:302021-05-24T19:08:40.922+05:30California House of horrors..

A 911 call from a 17 years old girl on January 14th 2018 revealed a horrifying stories that later made into international headlines. The teenager said twelve siblings, ages ranging from 2 to 29 were held captive in their own house by their own parents and it took her two years of planning to run away... Insane, right? Lets dig into it.
David Allen Turpin was born on 17th October 1961 in West Virginia and he graduated from Princeton High School in West Virginia in 1979. He graduated from Virginia Tech as a computer engineer and worked for Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. Loise Anna Robinette was born on 24th May 1968 in Princeton and attended the same high school until 1985. Her sister once stated that Loiuse and a female cousin was sexually harassed by their maternal grandfather and their mother accepted cash in return for the sexual abuse. The sister further said, later on Louise was obsessed with witchcraft, satanic rituals and ouija boards too.

Twenty three years old David Alan Turpin and sixteen years old Loiuse Anna Turpin got married in Pearisburg, Virginia in 1985 and David Turpin was a computer engineer who graduated from Virginia Tech. This couple were adherents of Quiverfull movement and Pentecostalism and it is said that they kept having children because god asked them to. They had 10 daughters and three sons and they named each child beginning with the letter J. In 1999 they left Fort Worth, Texas to Rio Vista and again left that area in 2010. When they finally left that house, what neighbours found was bizarre. They found human feces and beds with ropes tied into them and piles of garbage around the property. Below is a video I found on YouTube about that house by KSAT 12.

Some residents even saw them picking up rubbish around their home and looking for food in bins. Some even didn't know there were kids in that house. It is said that they kept the children starving while the parents ate well. They tormented the kids by leaving apple and pumpkin pies on the kitchen counter even though they were not allowed to eat the pies. They beat and strangled the kids as they please and they were only allowed to shower once per year. The eldest child who was 29 years old had the look of a teenager and weighed only 37 kgs. There were toys in the house but in original packaging. They could only look at the toys and not play with them. However the parents gave them journals where they wrote the abuse.Police discovered hundreds of journals filled with tears and abuse upon investigation.

When the police arrived at the house several children were shackled to beds with chains and padlocks and they said the parents kept them like that for weeks. They lack knowledge in even very common things. However the couple loved Disneyland and there are a couple of pictures of the whole family in Disneyland wearing matching T shirts. Also there is another photo of Turpin getting married in Las Vegas.

The police immediately hospitalized the kids and the parents were arrested. They were planning on leaving to Oklahoma at the time of the arrest. Turpin parents were charged with twelve counts of torture, twelve counts of false imprisonment, seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult and six counts of child abuse. Turpin father received an additional charge of a lewd act on a child under 14. They were sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 25 years. Turpin children were moved to a home in rural California where they can reunite with each other and live a normal life. Currently their attorney is working with local universities to create and educational plan for all of the siblings. Lets hope they will cherish the rest of their lives with happiness and with love...
Ruvi Ashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16268551346048392748noreply@blogger.com0
