1950s Children's Nuclear kit

Having your very own nuclear lab at home sounds pretty awesome, right? Well kids in 1950s had this opportunity when the famous American toy-maker, Alfred Carlton Gilbert decided to introduce a toy kit containing not only actual radioisotopes but also equipment to detect radiation. The kit was sold for 49.50$ in 1950 and it contained a battery powered GM counter, electroscope, spinthariscope, a wilson cloud  chamber with a Polonium source, four glass jars containing natural uranium bearing ores (autunite, torbenite, uraninite and carnotite), low level radiation sources (Pb-210, Ru-106, Zn-65), nuclear spheres to make a model of an alpha particle and three C batteries.

Doppler Calculations made easy...

Since A/L examination is starting in few days I thought of writing a quick post about something related to A/Ls. I will be explaining Doppler Effect and how to do calculations using formulas easily. This was taught to me by my Physics teacher in school who also happened to be my class teacher. Literally she is the best Physics teacher I had in my life and I didn't even need tuition classes for Physics. (She insisted me on practicing more problems so I went to a Physics class where the teacher focused more on questions than theory.) But I learned all the theories and how to apply them from her. So today I'm gonna share with you one of her lessons. It will get you full marks on your Doppler effect question in paper.

Radiotrophic Fungi - From Chernobyl to Mars..

Chernobyl accident , one of the major nuclear accidents in the human history occurred on April 26th 1986. An explosion in the reactor 4 in Chernobyl power plant (USSR) released a huge amount of radioactivity to the environment contaminating 160,000 square kilometers. Two hundred and three people were hospitalized and 31 died eventually It caused more than 200,000 indirect deaths.

Tragic end of a wasp

Hello everyone, after a long time I'm going to post something educational today. Even though my schedule is busy lately there's no way I will abandon this blog. So todays topic is wasps. The first thing comes to your mind when I say a wasp is the pain of their stings, right? But they helps us for our survival on this planet in so many ways that you are not aware of.. Curious? Then keep reading.

Greenhouse effect from the eyes of a chemist

If I ask you what is greenhouse effect and what causes it, you will say "Sun emits heat radiation and some gases in the atmosphere traps heat. So the cause for the greenhouse effect is those gases which are carbon dioxide and water vapor. Have you ever wondered exactly how these gases are trapping the heat? or why carbon dioxide, not oxygen or nitrogen? Today I'm going to give you answers..

Guess answers to MCQs like a pro !!!

In almost every exam we get multiple answer questions, but how many of us get 10 out of 10? Even though we know the content by heart, there are times that we might not be able to answer the question. In the grade 12 first term examination I didn't have enough time to answer for 9 mcqs. With the little time I had,if i was going to solve them, then I will only be solving only 2 or 3. So I just looked at the answers and then I got it.. It's not about the questions..the answers themselves guided me to the correct answer. In this method you don't even have to look at the question to get the correct answer. I have done this so many times and 90% times it worked. So lets see what is this magic ..

End semester exams...

Hmmm.... These days people in my university are so busy coz the end semester exams are in next month.. They are looking for notebooks, papers and so many other stuff.. It seems to me that most people are stressed. There might be some lucky individuals who may get stimulated coz of stress, but most people are worse than how they normally are, when stressed. So what I think is that getting tensed is not what is required at the moment.

Bus conductor's change and father's love...

Now you might wonder what kind of a topic is that ? Today morning I was in a statistics lecture and suddenly the lecturer mentioned this. "Father's love is like a bus conductor's change rupee (Sri Lankan rupee is the currency in my country) ". He said he saw it in a taxi. So he asked about our ideas on this topic. Some people answered the question (like fathers do not show their love) and I thought about it while travelling to home and here is what I think about it.

Why do we fall asleep when studying?

First semester is coming to an end and all are getting ready for the end semester exams. So I thought of something which will be useful for most of us.. Now all are studying and one of the most common problems we have is falling asleep while studying . Actually why do we fall asleep when we study? Sometime we wait in bed for hours till we fall asleep but when going to study, we fall asleep within minutes. So why is this happening? Here is the answer..

Truth...

I'm sure each and everyone of us have lied at least once in our lifetime...Maybe its coz we didn't have any other choice than lying or maybe coz it's a habit to lie. I have lied when I was a kid. But not anymore.. Now I'm an honest person and what I think is, it is better to die rather than lying.. and I consider lying as a huge crime a person can do... And I get so angry when someone is lying...

Improve your english..

So this is the season of university freshman .Most are worrying about the their English knowledge coz each and every lecture will be in English.First of all I have to say that I'm not from an English speaking country..So I'm going to give some tips based on my experiences.I started learning English a long time ago,but started learning it properly since 2006.

Try these questions and learn how SMART you are..

When I was going through my sisters old books I found some brain stormers there and they were quite challenging. So I thought of sharing those with you.Lets see how many of your answers are correct in the end..

A visit to the university of Peradeniya engineering faculty

The date was 03rd march 2013,and WE were going to visit the prestigious engineering faculty of the university of Peradeniya, which is considered as the most beautiful university in Sri lanka. Honestly we all were feeling nervous, and as soon as we get there we were having awkward looks from the university students. All the girls were wearing skirts and we thought it's the dress code for girls in engineering faculty.Soon we were taken into a conference hall and the dean of the engineering faculty gave a brief introduction about the university.

How to get 90+ for GCE A/L Chemistry paper..

Well  for most of the people doing A/Ls in science stream, chemistry is a nightmare, especially for physical science students. So today I'm going to tell you how to write to a chemistry paper in a much different way than you always do. Well it worked for me,and you should test this way with a model paper or in a term test before you go to exam. This saves time and also you can easily score 90+.

Edx the best MOOC

I was wondering what to do after A/Ls ,As we all know we have to wait a long time till we get selected to a university. Some people do English or IT courses. So what am i going to do?Then i found a good solution,MOOCs.  MOOCs or massive open online courses, are new to our country. Many people even don't know such a thing exists. What happens in MOOCs is world's prestigious universities offer online versions of their classes.Learning at Harvard university or MIT is like a dream, isn't it?Only few students are able to study at those universities. It's a dream for most of us,maybe it's coz we are not that rich,or we are not that smart. But what if they are offering you their materials and lectures for FREE? There were many websites offering online courses and my choice was Edx.It's online,so i can study whenever i want to and wherever i want. MIT and Harvard university created Edx in 2012.More than 70 schools and nonprofit organizations and corporations offer courses...

Good books for students studying for GCE A/L examination...

As we all know A/Ls is a very tough exam and you will not be able to finish it successfully by just studying. It needs practice, timing and all.So the best way to do it is do exercises and improve knowledge,i did A/Ls in physical science stream and in sinhala medium,so based on my experience i will recommend anyone to use following books. There may be books better than following list, but books below were used by me. Chemistry almost every book by hemachandra basnayaka Akabanika rasayanaya by Aruna Bandara (there are two books for inorganic chemistry, these books will help you in for the doubts you will have in doing mcqs) Akabanika rasayana pilibanda gunathmaka ha pramanathmaka wishleshanaya by Ranga gunarathna(this also will help you in mcqs) Organic chemistry by jayathilaka(this book is very good and it will help you to understand concepts in organic chemistry better) Physics Prof D.D.N balo dayas' books yanthra vidyawa by lakshaman dissanayaka(questionsin this book  are ...
