Screaming mummies...

PC: Kevin Hutchinson
A mummy always reminds of thousands of years old pharaohs and pyramids but many civilizations including Incan, Australian Aboriginal, Aztec, African etc have practiced several types of mummification processes to preserve bodies. Guanajuato mummies are world famous for its terrifying looks. It actually is a collection of hundreds of mummies which were mummified naturally during late 19th century. In 1850s a worldwide cholera outbreak caused thousands of deaths and soon  underground cemeteries in Guanjato were running out of space to accommodate bodies. So the authorities had to build walled crypts above ground and in this warm arid environment bodies started a natural mummification process.
In 1865 the local government introduced a " burial tax" which required families to pay a yearly grave tax. If the families are unable to pay it, bodies of their relatives will be removed and moved into a storage facility to be buried again in case the family come up with money later. People working on removing these bodies were shocked when they discovered the mummified corpses in the crypts. Mummies appeared to have terrified faces. The museum for these mummies officially opened in 1968 and currently they have around 100 mummies.

Some of these mummies has special stories related to those. The mummy of Ignacia Aguilar was found biting into her own arm and several wounds in her hands and temples which implied that she was buried alive."Mother and child" is also one of their famous exhibits. It is a mummy of a woman around 40 years old with her fetus (5-6 months in gestation). Her bone structure indicates malnutrition and her belly is still visible.

But why do mummies scream? This screaming expression is not unique to Guanajuato mummies and it can be seen in several other mummies throughout the world as well. The reason is the nature of the temporo-mandibular joint. Human jaw and cranium are only held together by ligaments and muscles. After death with the relaxation of muscles, jaw drops and this screaming expression can be seen. Modern day embalmers secure the mandible using needles and threads therefore we don't see this real life terror show in a funeral. Since we are programmed to determine the emotional states of other fellow humans using their facial expressions people tend to use the expressions of mummies to predict their emotional states at the last moments, but actually those are postmortem artifacts.

How to survive A/Ls in 3 months...

Today is the first of May and there are exactly three months until GCE A/L exams begin. I intend to help people who has realized this and started panicking and feeling lost, but not only A/L students but also any student with any upcoming exam can use these tips to ace your exam. I will first explain why most of us usually wait until the day before deadline to do stuff. It's explained by Parkinson's law which states that " Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion". What it means is, if we are given a week to finish a task we will finish it within the week and if we are given an year to finish the same task we will spend the whole year doing it. Well that's how usually us, lazy humans work. Now that you know what happened there is no time to regret about how we procrastinated on unnecessary things etc. Now it's time to damage control. I will not gurantee you will get 3As by following these. (It's possible depending on ...

The Alfred House

As a person who lived in Colombo 03 and a student of the University of Colombo, I often came across Alfred House Gardens, Alfred House Road, Alfred House Avenue, Alfred Place signboards and wondered what is this Alfred House. And I always forgot to search until I started reading "Colombo" by Mohan Raj Madawala. As you all know I'm a bookworm and once I get my hands on a book I stop everything and start reading it. So while I was reading suddenly Alfred House popped up. I was like.. wait. Is this the same Alfred House we are talking about? So I immediately googled Alfred House... and boy there it is. So I was reading a book about Alfred House while I was in a land once belonged to Alfred House? (I read it while in the place I used to stay at Colombo 03) It felt so crazy to think about it at that moment. About 150 years ago it was the Alfred House garden. I started imagining flowers, fountains, gardeners working in the garden etc.. And all of a sudden I wanted to know ...
