Kudiramalai Point...

Kudiramalai Point, or Thambapanni is a very significant area in Sri Lankan history. It is said that Prince Vijaya and his followers from India landed in Kudiramalai. It is also known as " Horse mountain and according to a one record by the Roman author Pliny, a Roman tax collector who was blown off course in the monsoon season and landed in horse mountain.

Ali rani who is also known as Ali arsani, a legendary queen in Sangam period is said to have ruled this area. According to legends she controlled the pearl fishery. Pearls were exported to arabian countries in return for horses.

Rocky structures with blue grey surfaces can be seen throughout this area and they were formed by wind and chemical weathering. According to Prof. Rohan Fernando these formations are the bedrock and these types of aeolian deposits are formed since this region is not heavily affected by monsoons. Reason for the reddish colour in these rock formations are caused by iron in the soil. Lower most parts contains ferrous which causes the deep red colour and brownish red formations are caused by ferric. Bluish Grey layer on top of these rocks indicate the presence of dolomite in the soil. Some scientists even believe this place was hit by a meteor in the past.

" Discovery of Ceylon" by R.L. Brohier, a book I enjoyed when I was young has several interesting facts about this place. According to the book once it was a big settlement and now its buried under copper brownish sand along with other secrets...
