UOC FOS

Since A/L exams are going to start within next few days I think, I can see a lot of viewers for my A/L posts. So I thought of giving you a bit of encouragement. I am a student who did A/Ls from physical science stream (Combined mathematics, Chemistry and Physics) and currently a 3rd year undergraduate studying nuclear medicine at University of Colombo, Faculty of Science. People think (even I thought) science faculties are boring and teachers are the only products of a science faculty.. Well that's wrong.. You can be a teacher if you want to, but that happens rarely here. None of the seniors I know ended up as teachers. The product of a science faculty is a scientist. Most of the people go abroad for higher studies (usually they get scholarships) and others join research groups. That doesn't mean you can't do a job or earn a good salary. That is up to you to decide whether you are gonna study or do a job. Main goal of a maths student in Sri Lanka is to go to an engineering faculty, but it was never in my agenda. I was a curious star gazer since I was a kid and I always wanted to be a scientist.. So science faculty was my choice.

So what actually happens in a science faculty? I will describe it briefly here, but people who are interested in can drop me an email or comment below to know more information. In our faculty there are 4 major types of streams, physical science, bio science, molecular biology and industrial statistics and mathematical finance. Within the first two years we study selected 4 main subjects ( for physical science students applied mathematics and computer science are compulsory. We can select 2 other subjects: pure mathematics, chemistry, physics and statistics) Based on your performance in first two years you can select an area of study you like and specialize it (special degree)within next two years or you can study the 3rd year in the same way you did for 2 years and graduate with a 3 year general degree. There are also 4 year general degrees with areas of specialties. I will mention below the special degrees and 4 year general degrees offered by the UOC FOS.

Special degrees

Mathematics
Physics
Engineering physics
Computational physics
Chemistry
Computational Chemistry
Pharmaceutical Chemistry
Molecular biology and biochemistry
Zoology
Environmental Science
Immunology and integrative molecular biology
Statistics
Statistics with computer science
Industrial Statistics
Bioinformatics
Plant science
Plant biotechnology
Nuclear medicine ( Both physical and biological science students are eligible)

(For more information about the intakes you can click HERE)

4 year general degree programmes

IT
Electronics and IT
Applied statistics
Business and environment
Horticulture and sustainable landscaping
Finance and insurance
Nuclear science and technology

So what actually your life will be when you finally get there? Well trust me.. It's all about working hard and that doesn't mean you have to work hard always.. but you have to spend it wisely. Well you can waste your youth on streets and lecturing juniors about how they should behave.. or you can use your free time to develop yourself as a person. Go see the world with your friends. Read some books. Visit nearby places, exhibitions.. Try new cuisines. Here I'm posting some of the pics of my university life. For some people it might be boring, but we all can enjoy our lives the way we want, right? You can have your fun your way, but without hurting others. Have a nice day !!!

Hiking

Alagalla hike 2k16

Hanthana hike 2k17

Join some clubs and societies

Travel with your friends

Go visit exhibitions and concerts nearby

Go out and try different cuisines

Sing a song and have some fun...

Life is to enjoy, not to suffer.. How you do it is up to you... Good Luck for your exams.. !!! And Congratulations for those who got selected to universities..

    2. Hi, as you already know the paper has two parts. First part consists of MCQ questions while the second part has essay and structured essay questions. For MCQs you need a lot of practice and time management. But for the essay questions we kind of know what they are asking. So we can plan on which questions we should choose and master those lessons before the exam.

Good books for students studying for GCE A/L examination...

As we all know A/Ls is a very tough exam and you will not be able to finish it successfully by just studying. It needs practice, timing and all.So the best way to do it is do exercises and improve knowledge,i did A/Ls in physical science stream and in sinhala medium,so based on my experience i will recommend anyone to use following books. There may be books better than following list, but books below were used by me. Chemistry almost every book by hemachandra basnayaka Akabanika rasayanaya by Aruna Bandara (there are two books for inorganic chemistry, these books will help you in for the doubts you will have in doing mcqs) Akabanika rasayana pilibanda gunathmaka ha pramanathmaka wishleshanaya by Ranga gunarathna(this also will help you in mcqs) Organic chemistry by jayathilaka(this book is very good and it will help you to understand concepts in organic chemistry better) Physics Prof D.D.N balo dayas' books yanthra vidyawa by lakshaman dissanayaka(questionsin this book  are

How to survive A/Ls in 3 months...

Today is the first of May and there are exactly three months until GCE A/L exams begin. I intend to help people who has realized this and started panicking and feeling lost, but not only A/L students but also any student with any upcoming exam can use these tips to ace your exam. I will first explain why most of us usually wait until the day before deadline to do stuff. It's explained by Parkinson's law which states that " Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion". What it means is, if we are given a week to finish a task we will finish it within the week and if we are given an year to finish the same task we will spend the whole year doing it. Well that's how usually us, lazy humans work. Now that you know what happened there is no time to regret about how we procrastinated on unnecessary things etc. Now it's time to damage control. I will not gurantee you will get 3As by following these. (It's possible depending on

How to get 90+ for GCE A/L Chemistry paper..

Well  for most of the people doing A/Ls in science stream, chemistry is a nightmare, especially for physical science students. So today I'm going to tell you how to write to a chemistry paper in a much different way than you always do. Well it worked for me,and you should test this way with a model paper or in a term test before you go to exam. This saves time and also you can easily score 90+.
