So this is May, the month most Sri Lankans celebrate vesak which is the most important festival for Buddhists. It marks the birth, enlightenment and passing away to Nirvana of the lord Buddha. Vesak is a cultural and a religious festival which is celebrated in the full moon day in May. So people make vesak lanterns and so many other things to celebrate vesak. There is a concept very special than vesak lanterns. It was introduced thousands of years ago. Even in the time of lord Buddha this was used according to books. It is, giving food and other things for free. In early times people who were very rich and also kings made places where poor people can have food for free. They did that as a social service. So in vesak season people collect money and give things for free, mostly it is food. Rice, bread, noodles etc are given free for anyone. So people wait for hours inques and eat.
